Regular monthly meetings of the Garfield County Genealogists
are held on the second Saturday of each month at 1:30 pm, in the Great
Plains Room on the second floor of the Enid Public Library, 102 W. Main,
in downtown Enid, Oklahoma. Workdays are held every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Research Area (Second floor) of the Enid Library. If you are interested in compiling your family
history, you are welcome to visit at either time. See what we have been doing at our monthly meetings below!

JANUARY: Our first speaker for the new year was Jim Goodrich, a veteran of World War II. Mr. Goodrich recounted some of his experiences in the U. S. Marine Corps at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Iwo Jima during the war. He also told about his memorable return trip to Iwo Jima last year. |

|
FEBRUARY: Bob Klemme, well-known historian of the Chisholm Trail, spoke about historic sites along the trail in northern Oklahoma, and about the ongoing process of getting a Federal "National Historic Trail" designation for the Chisholm Trail. Also, several members brought antique Valentine cards for the display table. |

|
|
MARCH: Writer Martha Draper discussed techniques for creating interesting family memoirs from genealogical research. Members brought old timepieces for the display table, in observance of the change to daylight-saving time. See more photographs.... |

APRIL: Our members traveled to Fairview, Oklahoma to meet at the Major County Historical Society Museum. There they met with members of the Major County Genealogical Society, and discussed issues of interest to both groups. Later, members toured the grounds of the Museum, enjoying the many old buildings which have been preserved, and the wonderful exhibits on display, both inside and out! Read more about it!!! |

MAY: Maxine Shepard and Ruth Skinner gave an enjoyable presentation entitled, "Grandma's Apron: History and Memories." Members also brought family heirloom aprons for the display table. A business meeting followed, in which amendments to the GCGI constitution were approved. |

|
JUNE: The new Educational Director of the Regional Heritage Center, Aaron Preston, was our guest speaker. He spoke about the resources available for genealogical research. Also, members brought personal family "Wedding" memorabilia for the display table.

|
|
JULY: Wendy Quarles, director of Pegasys, the community-access television station in Enid, discussed the techniques of video interviewing for genealogists. She also explained the function of Pegasys, and it's value to the community. The display table was a "patriotic" theme. |

AUGUST: The Garfield County Genealogists held their annual summer picnic indoors, because of the summer heat! There was plenty of good food, and a business meeting followed. |
|

SEPTEMBER: The "Cherokee Strip Days" parade will be the focus for our members in September. Come and join the fun! |

JANUARY: A multi-media presentation about researching the pioneering Calvin Jones family, (homesteaders in the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893), was given by members Gene and Jeanette Heitfeld. |
|
|
|
FEBRUARY: Michelle Swain, the new director of the Public Library of Enid and Garfield County, discussed the services which the Library has to offer. |
|

MARCH: The Enid High School Alumni Association's extensive database of names, and how it is managed, was the topic of discussion by Jerry Kunkel. |
|
|
|
APRIL: The meeting was held in the "saloon" of
the wonderful Simpson's Old Time Museum, in downtown Enid. We were
treated to a guided tour of the museum by Rick and Larry W. Simpson, Western movie stars and producers, and well-known celebrities. Read more about it...

MAY: Our guest was Chelsey Simmons, who performed as "Annie
Sullivan". There was a question and answer period at the end of the
impressive Chautauqua-style portrayal. Also, as a Mother's Day tribute, everyone brought pictures of their
mothers and/or grandmothers for the display table, and gave a short presentation about the subjects in the pictures.

|
JUNE: Members visited the Ponca City Library's genealogy department, where they enjoyed wonderful hospitality, and had a productive day of researching. |
|
|
|
JULY: Donna Lamb gave a presentation about lineage societies, and displayed the pins, sashes, and coats-of-arms of the societies to which she belongs. Following the presentation, several people discussed research problems they have encountered, and experienced members offered helpful suggestions.

|
 |
AUGUST: The Garfield County Genealogists held their annual summer picnic in air-conditioned comfort, to beat the 100°F heat! There was a good turn-out of members and guests who enjoyed the wonderful food and fellowship. Thanks to the Coopers for the hamburgers, and the Lewises for the hotdogs. |

|
SEPTEMBER: Members participated in the annual "Cherokee Strip Days" celebration on September 12, 2009, which was held around the Courthouse square in downtown Enid. Our members had an old car in the parade, and a booth on the Courthouse lawn, from which they provided information about genealogy, and membership in Garfield County Genealogists. Read

OCTOBER: Our special guest was Errol Wofford, also known as "Cactus Jack". He spoke about "Trail Tails", his popular downtown historical walking tour, and about his interest in bringing to life the colorful history of Enid and the Chisholm Trail. Mr. Wofford also told us about the historical organization of which he is a part, the Chisholm Trail Coalition.

|
|
NOVEMBER: David Kennedy, curator of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center, spoke about his interest in the history of the American West, about collections management and preservation, and about planned exhibits at the new museum. He took questions from the floor about all aspects of historical artifacts, and provided an enjoyable presentation. |
|
| |
DECEMBER: In celebration of the holiday season, members held their annual Christmas "tasting party", and enjoyed many delicious treats. |
