They were married in 1899 in what was then Oklahoma Territory. They later moved to western Oklahoma in the panhandle where they lived in a dugout. Purley and Gertrude Brown, called Purl and Gertie, were married in Enid, OK and lived in Covington for awhile. Florence was born there. Before long they went to Northwestern Oklahoma in a wagon and staked a claim. They lived in a dugout and raised broom corn. Frances was born there but lived just three months. Herbert Lloyd (called Lloyd) was born there and when he was a few months old took pneumonia. Purl and Gertie had to take him 18 miles in a wagon to a doctor, so they stayed in town until he was better. Soon after that they traded their claim for a butcher shop in Clifton, Kansas. They ran the butcher shop until they sold it to move to Okeene, Oklahoma. There they stayed with Gertie's sister Myrtle until after Alice was born, then went to visit Purl's folks at Covington.

Florence went to three schools her first year of school: Okeene, Covington, then Clifton, Kansas. They lived in Clifton when Charles was born and also Vining, Kansas, one mile from Clifton where Rosetta was born. She lived eight months before she died from summer complaint. Alice ate green apples the day of the funeral and nearly died also that night. Purl and Gertie had three doctors with her, who told them that the fact that Alice also ate some beads the neighbors made of salt and coloring was all that saved her.

Purl worked in a furniture store and funeral home in Clifton. He assisted in embalming corpese and sometimes would have to drive miles riding on the top of the hearse pulled by horses in bitter cold weather. Later they had a motorized hearse. The Brown family first rode in a car when Mr. Turner, owner of the furniture store, took them all for a ride in his big car. It was quite a thrill.

In 1917 the Browns moved back to Covington,. where Purl farmed until 1922.. Burgess was born there in 1921. There was a lot of work in California where Purl's brother Frank lived, so in 1922 Purl sold everything and the Brown family went to California in a Model T Ford. The trip took two weeks and sometimes going up the mountains the family would get out and walk and if the car stopped, hurry to put rocks under the wheels. They lived in West Alhambra in California and Purl had plenty of carpenter work, but Gertie was very unhappy there. They got on a train and went back to Covington, Oklahoma November 1 and Marjorie was born November 20.

From that time on Purl worked at oil refineries in Covington, Bristow and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He retired while living in Oklahoma City and they later moved to Stigler, Oklahhoma where both Purl and Gertie died.

Purley married Gertrude May Allen on 16 Jul 1904 in Enid, OK. Gertrude was born on 12 May 1883 in Blue Ridge, MO. She died on 14 Aug 1972 in Stigler, OK.
