MARCUS AND RUTH TURBYFILL
By their former daughter-in-law, Betty Jo Scott
Marcus was a Church of the Nazarene Preacher and with Ruth by his side their ministry took them to several churches in Oklahoma and Kansas and also into evangelistic ministry. When he appllied for his Social Security number in 1955 he was at the Southside Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City, OK. I met them in 1946 while they lived in Enid and spent many hours in their home. They were always very good to me, Marcus with his direct and forceful personality and Ruth in her gentle, loving way.

By their granddaughter, Marsha Turbyfill Benker
My grandparents were such an important part of my life I can't imagine what I would be without their influence on me. They were so kind and patient and gave me unconditional love. Their religious faith had a strong impact on me. Not in the way I think they would have wanted because to this day I have no interest in religion. But I think I am a much better person because of their kindness and sincere commitment to their faith. I have many wonderful memories of our times together. I guess the older I get the more those memories mean to me.

We had great fun in the summers, grandad had a good sense of humor. I remember our outings to the miniature golf course. There was one in particular that we went to several times. We would play a round of golf (which grandmother always won and I think that kind of miffed grandad) and then eat watermelon. This place had picnic tables set up and whole watermelons, ( the round dark green kind that I think were called Black Diamond) in big tubs of ice water. The kind of tubs that pop used to be iced down in. We would select our melon and they would cut it in huge chunks and we would sit and eat it at the tables under the stars.

I remember getting in trouble with grandad during Church one Sunday. I was sitting with Pete and I guess we were whispering and probably cutting up. He reprimanded us from the Pulpit in the middle of his Sermon and I was mortified.

I vaguely remember some of our road trips when I was little. Don't really remember where we went as much as the drive itself. When I was small he made me a little stool so that I could sit between them in the front seat and see the road (no seat belts back then) He would make jokes that I thought were just hilarious about the bugs that splattered on the windshield.

We took regular outings to the local drive-in for a Dairy Queen (an ice cream cone). I remember grandmother cooking all morning because they ate their main meal of the day at noon and then my grandad would put a spoonful of Peanut Butter on his empty plate and then mix honey with it and that was one of his favorite deserts. They both watched their weight and my grandmother would sit down on the floor several days a week to do her "excersises"

Almost every weekday morning grandad would go to the Church office to work on his Sermon. He would take me with him and I would sit at the piano in the Sanctuary and just play it by ear for what seemed like hours and think that I was such a talented pianist.

I miss them very much and will always be grateful for the heritage they gave me.
