C.D.WELLER, DEPUTY MANAGER OF SAFETY (From the Denver Post, February 28, 1992)
Denny moved from Kansas to Denver with his family when he was 7 years old. He
attended Notre Dame University and jointed the Denver police force in 5959.

He married Joan Brandt on April 28, 1956, in Raton N.M., and graduated from
Regis College in 1962 with a degree in sociology.

He took a leave from the Police Department in 1963 for graduate work in
criminology at the University of Florida. He earned his master's degree in 1963 and worked as a probation officer in Denver until 1972. From 1963 to 1967, he was also chairman of Regis' sociology department. He left that position to become associate project director of the American Justice Institute in California.

In 1972, Mayor Bill McNichols hired him as criminal justice director for a $20 million Law Enforcement Assistance Administration grant. "He got the best out of everyone," McNichols said. "He was a very unusual person because his loyalty was not political, it was his belief in his fellow beings."

Under the grant program, which was administered by the Denver Anti-Crime
Council, Mr. Weller created the motorcycle patrol unit, the Special Crime
Attack Team (SCAT), now a metrowide unit, and a safe house for women.

In 1984, he was appointed director of public safety policy analysis. He became deputy manager of public safety a year later and retired in January, 1991. The city named the new communications center after him on Oct. 31, 1991. It will be fully functional later this year.

A CHRISTMAS WISH RENEWED ONE DAY AT A TIME
Cancer Stricken Planner Fights Odds, Wants To Be With Family
(By Bill Briggs, Denver Post Staff Writer)

Denny Weller has always been direct. So ti comes as no surprise that the
visionary Denver planner has applied the same head-on, hard-bitten approach to his latest battle. "You wanna talk about dying?" he says, greeting a visitor in his cozy Lakewood home.

A low profile mover behind key public safetky projects in Denver, Weller has
waged a remarkable war against a particularly virulent strain of cancer. With a gritty desire to see his grandchildren born and holidays celebrated, he's
outlived his dovtor's grim prognosis by more than a year. "The doctor said I
deserved a gold medal - not a silver or bronze. He said he didn't think I'd
last this long," said Weller, former deputy manager of safety for Denver. "But now the awaremess that the end is coming has kind of consumed me." he said.

It began 15 months ago when doctors removed a malignant 7-pound tumor from his hip as well as one of his kidneys. The 56-year-old former Denver cop was placed on an experimental interferon program and told told he might not survive more than a few months. Drawing on the same traits - tenacity and goal-setting - that he used to propel Denver's new communication center and city's domestic violence manual, the long-range planner had to begin taking life one day at a time.

One year ago, in an interview with The Denver Post, Weller said he just wanted to reach his next milestone, Christmas 1990. When the holidays passed, he set his sights on the May births of two grandchildren. But a month before the babies arrived, Weller slipped into a coma and nearly died. "He was really sick. He had renal failure and we called the (five) kids home." said Weller's wife, Joan. Added Weller: "They thought I was going to go."

But after doctors cut his dosage of interferon, he pulled out of the coma.
Today, he scratches yet another goal off the calendar, Thanksgiving. "More and more, I'm thinking maybe the denial, the hoping, the goal-setting and living a day at a time were all part of fighting back," Weller said.

Now, he's staring down another crises. A few weeks ago, a tumor was detected in his brain. While he's successfully beating back the disease's latest offensive, it has forced Weller to take a cold, pragmatic look at his situation. "The only change he made is that before he just couldn't or wouldn't accept that he was going to die," said Joan. "Now he know he will. But he's going to fight it 'til it happens."

Weller has been undergoing radiation treatment to kill the brain tumor and says he's felt better in the last three weeks than he has in months. Forced to retire last Jan. 1, Weller spends his days tinkering around the house, taking calls from well-wishers and making an occasional tour of the communication center he fought so hard for.

He now looks ahead to spending Christmas with his wife and five children. "If I get through this holiday season, I'll be happy again."

VISIONARY DENVER PLANNER, DENNY WELLER, DIES AT 56 (From the Rocky
Mt. news, February 26, 1992)
Denny Weller, a visionary Denver planner who hammered home scores of criminal
justice projects, has lost his 20-month fight against cancer. Weller, 56, died yesterday morning at his home.

He was forced to retire as Denver's deputy manager of safety Jan. 9, 1991,
five months after a 7-pound tumor was removed from his hip. He was told the
cancer had spread and he wouldn't live three months.

In honoring him for his work on the domestic violence manual, County Court
Judge Jacqueline St. Joan remembered her first dealing wih Weller."We sat
across his desk from one another - the feminist attorney and police department bureaucrat - and I wondered if (then Manager of Safety John) Simonet had done either one of us a favor," St. Joan said.

"But Denny talked and I listened, and I talked and he listened, and over the
coming months, I came to realize that this was maybe the one person in the
whole world who seemed to understand the workings of Denver's criminal justice system."

Weller is survived by his wife, Joan; three daughters, Cindy Wood, Tami
McElhaney and Cathy Seidel; two sons, John and Dan, his mother, two brothers, a sister and six grandchildren.

Visitation will take place at McConaty Boulevard Mortuary, 1091 S. Colorado
