STORY: DUNCAN MCLAREN, SON OF DUNCAN by Anna May Taylor

Duncan McLaren was born in Tullich, Perthshire, Scotland. Parochial
records of the Killin Parish, Scotland, record his baptism 11 Dec 1810. He was the fourth child of Duncan McLaren and Anna Bella McDiarmid. Accoring to the 1861 census records of Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, he died about 1857/61. His last child was born in 1857 but he was deceased by 1861 when the census was taken. He emigrated with his parents in 1815 on the S.S. Dorothy.

Duncan married, probably in Glengarry County, Ontario, Marjory (or
Margaret) (last name unknown) about 1833. She was born about 1809 in Scotland.

On a trip to Bruce County, Ontario, Canada in October, 1973, we
interviewed Mrs. George Downey, Secretary of the Bruce County Historical
Society. She was extremely interested in genealogy and had many notes about the McLaren family. She stated that Duncan McLaren settled in Bruce County first before his brother. She also had notes that he had lived in Lochiel, Glengarry County, Ontario, for eleven years. Whether he also moved to Prescott County before moving to Bruce I do not know. Duncan once owned the property upon which Mrs. Downey now lives in Bruce Township, lots 6 & 7, concession 12. This land passed from Duncan into the possession of his sons, Daniel and Archibald, bachelor brothers, in 1877. (The source of this statement was from the Directory of Bruce) She stated that "The Villager", (an inn I believe), which still stands, was built by Duncan.

Duncan and Marjory McLaren were Presbyterians by faith. They had ten
children. They were found on the 1851 census in Bruce Township. An interesting comment by the census taker was as follows: "These settlers have all come in last fall except Stanton, Manning?, Hortgins?, and LaDuke and chopping and clearing fast this winter but the depth of the snow is much against them. This like the other townships is well watered and the soil is fertile. The interior is well supplied with small lakes and creeks. A small river called the Little Sable runs through the township taking it's use? back in Elderslie; from the members that have been exploring and examining the severity of the winter and immense depth of the snow have been the means of preventing some settlers from going on to the land this winter." Note: Some words were difficult to read.

Duncan married Marjory about 1833 in , Glengarry, Ontario, Canada.
