STORY: JOHN D. MCLAREN, SON OF DUNCAN I by Anna May Taylor as given in her
McLaren Family History Information.John D. McLaren was born in 1804 in Perthshire, Scotland. He was baptised 4 Feb 1803/4 in Killin Parrish, Breadalbane, Scotland. He died on 29 October 1877 in Tiverton, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, according to his gravestone at the Tiverton Cemetery. He married about 1827/28, probably in Glengarry (or Prescott) County, Ontario, Canada, Mary Stuart. The record of their marriage has not been found. She was born about 1802 in Scotland and died 5 May 1866 in Tiverton. Their gravestones are side by side near their daughter, Janet (McLaren) McDonald. Their stones are inscribed as follows:

Native of Perthshire May 5, 1866 Aged 66 years
Scotland Aged 64 yrs. & 3 mths.John D. McLaren was probably the son of Duncan and Annabella (McDiarmid)
McLaren. He came to Canada in 1815 of the SS Dorothy from Scotland with his
parents. The family believes that Mary Stuart came to Canada as a child with
her parents on the same ship. Their families probably settled in Lochiel
Township, Glengarry County, Ontario. They were Baptists by faith. After his marriage, John D. McLaren is said to have lived in Renfrew. I
have not found a record of this but they are found in the 1851 census living in East Hawkesbury Township, Prescott County, Ontario. Hawkesbury is in the very northeast part of Ontario Province in Canada. In the proper column of the census there is a notation that John, the father, and sons, Peter and Duncan, are absent from home. They were probably away locating their new home in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada.John D. McLaren followed his brother, Duncan, to Bruce County, who had
settled there in the fall of 1851. The family must have already settled in
Bruce by 1854 for according to "The History Of The County of Bruce" by Norman
Robertson, p 321, it is stated:"In September, 1854, the United Counties Council received a petition from John McLaren and other, praying that the township of Bruce be separated
from the township of Kincardine and erected into a distinct municipality."The census of 1861 enumerates John D. McLaren and his family living in
Bruce Township, Bruce County, Lot Letter I, in the 1st Concession. The settlers often squatted on this new land as there is no record that John ever purchased it. However, Lot I, Concession l, was entered as a Crown Grant to John's son, Peter Stewart McLaren on 4 Nov 1872 who, it was said, purchased it for $200.These settlers endured many hardships clearing their farmlands. Winters
were bitter cold and food was scarce. Most of them were excellent fishermen.
Though their soil was fertile the deep snow in the winter prevented them from
growing crops. Big kettles of potatoes, which they had stored, and fish from
Lake Huron was their chief sustenance.John McLaren moved from his farm, probably about the time that Peter
bought it, to a smaller place in Tiverton. His daughter, Janet McLaren
McDonald, who had become a widow, moved in with him and cared for him in his
old age. At some time after the death of her father, Janet moved to New York.
She died there but was returned to Tiverton where she received a Methodist
funeral and was buried near her parents at Tiverton Cemetery. (Mrs. Downey's
notes).Note from Anna May Taylor: The fact that John D. McLaren of Tiverton
married a Miss Stuart was told to us by Mrs. George Downey from notes in her
possession. The children of Duncan Stuart McLaren were told that their father's mother's maiden name was Stuart (Stewart) and they lived in Tiverton.New evidence was just received (12-14-74) in a letter from Mr. Stuart
McLaurin of Fairview Park, Ohio, as follows: "The Stewart Family History shows the following - MARY STEWART b. 1802, d 5 May 1866, aged 64 yrs., 3 mths. m John D. McLaren of Tiverton, b 1804, d 29 Oct 1877."Mr. McLaurin continues, "I have a copy of the Stewart booklet which I
photocopied from Lorne Stewart in Hopetown." I have written to Mr. McLaurin for photocopies of the pages of the "Stewart Family" which might reveal the parentage of Mary Stuart (Stewart).Aboard the S.S. Dorothy which arrived in Canada in 1815, along with
several McLaren families, were Peter Stewart, b 1775, from Balimore and his
wife, Christion McLean, b 1784. This couple could be Mary's parents though
further proof is necessary.
John married Mary Stuart(Stewart) about 1827/1828 in , Ontario, Canada. Mary was born about 1810 in , Scotland. She died on 5 May 1866 in Tiverton, Bruce, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Tiverton, Bruce, Ontario, Canada.
