EUGENE CUTTER
by Nina Cutter Messenger, 1994
As we are in the year 1994, we can see that family values are
deteriorating. I am thankful that my grandparents and parents were mindful of
family values.
When my father and his brother, John, were young men, my grandmother,
Caroline Cutter, deeded each of the boys 80 acres. Little did she know that the
land would provide for several people. My Uncle John and Aunt Edith had a
family of six; Florence, Dora, Opal, Charlie, Eula Fern, and Donna Marie.
My folks, Nathan and Lettie, had a family of ten but only raised eight
living children; Eugene, Edith, Ellis, Ethel, Eva Pauline, Nina, Alice Belle,
and Derald Dean.
Being this close together, it we needed company, we could go across the
field east to Uncle John's. If we wanted more excitement, we would go south to
Uncle Joe Gibson's place. The Roelse family were also close by. We also had
some good neighbors that were always glad for company.
The climax of the summer was when our city cousins, Merle and May from
Enid, came to see us. Things did get lively then. Charlie Cutter brought his
Shetland pony, Dandy, to our place. We had a horse that didn't have much pep; we
could slide off her back and she wouldn't even kick. Dandy was used to just one
rider and that was Charlie. May wanted to ride Dandy so she did. Dandy decided
to go home and she took out for home in a run. All May could do was to hang on.
Merle got to laughing so hard he got down on the ground and rolled. I don't
remember, but I doubt if May thought it was that funny.
Our parents provided well for us and were devoted to the welfare of their
children. They intended for each one of us to take part in the every day
chores. The girls had to help bring the cows in and we did our part in milking
the cows.
The purpose of this story is to tell about my brothers and sisters.
My brother, Eugene Raymond Cutter, was born February 16, 1905, and died
January 7, 1956, at the age of 51. Eugene was a quiet and dependable person. He
went to high school for a while but didn't graduate. My Uncle Earl and Aunt
Dora Lunger had a cleaning shop in Covington. Eugene worked for them; he ran
the big press that pressed the clothes. This was a dress shirt job and my
mother kept his shirts cleaned and ironed. She heated the iron on the old wood
stove. I don't know how long he worked there but he did different jobs around
Covington and helped at home. Our dad and Eugene farmed together. He was good
to help with the care of the younger children in the family. Here is a story I
have told before:
One year, our mother had to go to the General Hospital for gall bladder
surgery. Our dad went with her in the ambulance and didn't come home until she
returned. Eugene was home with children.
One Sunday, he took us to Enid to see Mother. By the time we got home we
were all choking up with the croup. When bedtime came, he wouldn't let us go to
bed. He was afraid we would choke to death. He kept us awake all night and made
us drink hot lemonade. It was a happy day when our folks returned.
At the age of 31, Eugene married Mae Copper. She was also a quiet person
and very dependent on Eugene. Her younger sisters-in law made the remark, "Mae
wouldn't buy a handkerchief without asking Eugene." They must have lived around
Covington for awhile.
Their son, Raymond Eugene, was born in 1940. Eugene and Mae settled on a
farm near Orlando, Oklahoma, and farmed there for awhile. Eugene had a bad
heart attack and had to leave the farm. He was forced to sell his farm
equipment and livestock. I think at the time his farm equipment and livestock
sold he was still in the hospital. In those days, they kept them a long time. I
think he stayed over six weeks. Raymond was just a small boy and he had a
riding horse that he had to part with. Alfred and I went to the sale for moral
support for Mae and Raymond. Raymond was asked to ride his horse out in front
of the people and tell them about his horse. He sat on his horse as brave as he
could be and talked about him. I was the one that cried. I was sorry that
Raymond had to give his horse up besides having a sick father.
Eugene had a real large horse named Fox. We were fortunate enough to buy
him. After Eugene recovered he was able to come our place in Hillsdale and ride
Fox. It was usually on Sunday afternoon and he would bring Mother, Mae and
Raymond.
Eugene went into partnership with Mae's brother-in-law. They bought a
frozen food locker in Crescent. This wasn't an easy job either, but he was able
to do this for around nine years, or maybe a little longer. I just don't
remember. About every Sunday he would go to Covington and see our Mother. That
also got him out of town so his customers wouldn't bother him.
One evening, he had been down to the locker for some reason and he
returned home and was ready to step in the house when he died suddenly.
This was such a shock to Mae that she was in ill health for a while but
finally recovered. It was also hard on our Mother. She was never the same after
Eugene's death January 7, 1956. Mother died November 12, 1956. May and Eugene
had been married twenty years. Raymond was sixteen years old when his father
died.
I guess after Raymond married, Mae moved to Enid. She bought her a small
house and lived within walking distance from downtown Enid. She worked a few
years at what is now Richills. Mae's job at meal times was serving bread and
rolls.
Raymond was very good to look after his mother and she died in 1990 after
being a widow for 34 years.
Raymond's wife is Sharon Dodd. Raymond and Sharon have a nice family.
Their son and daughters are Raygene, Wayne, Lora Mae, and Delynda. They are
devoted to their children and grandchildren. They are all married and live
quite close. Two live on the same farm in trailer houses. Raygene lives in
Crescent and Lora Mae in Oklahoma City.
Raymond has been on a sick leave for over two years and just this summer
he made a point to visit Alice Belle, Pauline and Nina. He said he wanted to
know his aunts better.
We have a family reunion every year in August and usually most of his
family are present.

Eugene married Lena Mae Copper daughter of Eli Copper on 28 Sep 1936. Lena was born on 20 Sep 1906 in , Kingfisher, Ok. She died on 16 May 1990 in Crescent, Logan, Ok. She was buried on 19 May 1990 in Covington Cem, Garfield, Ok.

ELLIS CUTTER
By his sister, Nina Cutter Messenger in 1994

My brother, Ellis, was born January 2, 1909, and died on May 6, 1965. We
all knew him as Porky. This name was given to him because he had a short
haircut that made him look like a porcupine. This was a name that he lived up
to because when he was around something interesting was happening. He was the
life of the family.
He was working at a filling station in town and one day a woman stopped to
buy some gas. She knew his name was related to a pig, so instead of calling him
Porky, she called him "Bacon". As soon as she said it she knew it was a
mistake.
Porky had all kinds of girl friends, 3 or 4 at a time. At Christmas time
he slowed down on his dates and we would ask him why. His reply was that he
couldn't afford to buy that many Christmas presents.
He would go to sleep with the radio or phonograph on. As soon as we
thought he was sound asleep, we would turn it off; he'd wake up every time.
He was the barber in the family. Saturday afternoon was hair cut day. We
would sit in the chair and before he started cutting, he would tap us on top of
the head with something to make sure we would sit still.
One real large girl lived in Covington and he said a person would have to
have two dates with her because he couldn't get his arms around her on just one
date.
One day my father was gone and Porky and his friend were watching after
things. They went to feed the pigs and one started after them. Porky picked up
a club and hit her over the head. The pig fell over dead. The two boys hurried
about, heated water and butchered her. When my Dad returned home they had the
pig hanging up ready to cut up so they could cure the meat for the family.
We always had fun even though we were kept busy most of the time. One
night I received an unwanted telephone call. Porky had answered so I told him
to say "I wasn't home." Porky said, "Nina says she isn't at home." Sometimes he
was helpful and sometimes not so helpful.
Pauline, Nina, and Alice Belle had the same things in common. We always
thought it was nice to go to Covington on Saturday night. It was easy for us to
get away from home if our parents knew we were with our brothers. Then we had
to do some strong talking to get away from our brothers.
As I write this I am wondering how parents today would keep up with eight
children?
Porky worked in Covington at various jobs, mostly gas stations. Our farm
was a short distance from Covington so it was handy for him to be one place or
the other. We all had to manage to be home at chore time because we milked
several cows. The girls helped right along with our brothers.
Porky dated a lot of girls. It was hard to keep up with him but he did
pick one special one and and her name was Ethyl Braithwaite. She was a school
teacher. They were married April 1, 1932. He had some good reasons to get
married April 1, but I don't remember them now.
Ethyl and Porky lived around in the Covington and Marshall communities for
a while. I think he worked in the oil field. They even moved a house from
Covington to an oil lease. Their son, Howard, was born February 19, 1936. He
was a nice little curly headed boy. For several years, they traveled around and
worked several different places like Louisiana and Coldwater, Kansas.
Later, they came back to Enid and Porky worked and traveled the country
for George Failing Co. He had a real good, interesting job but it kept him away
from home too much. Due to Ethyl's ill health he had to stay close to home. He
used his experience that he learned at Failing's and got into the business of
drilling water wells. I have an article in one of my scrapbooks that tells
about him inventing some kind of "bit" for special drilling.
Porky didn't finish high school but he did well in the water well drilling
business. His last place was in Chanute, Kansas. Porky had a bad heart attack.
He was able to live a fairly normal life for a while and he looked after Ethyl.
They fell heir to Mrs. Braithwaite's house in Enid and were living there at the
time Porky died. Like his father and brother, Eugene, he died suddenly one
night in his sleep.
Here is something interesting. My father, Eugene, and Porky died suddenly
of a heart attack and were no older that 57 years of age. Our father was 57,
Eugene 51, and Porky 56. This also happened to my father's brothers and their
sons. Only two male cousins lived to an older age. Ethyl died in 1985, twenty
years after Porky died. Porky's son, Howard and his wife, Bessie, have two
boys, Randy and Chris. Randy and Chris also have families and are in the water
well drilling business with Howard and Bessie. We have kept up with Howard by
letters but we haven't seen him much since his mother died.

Ellis married Ethel Braithwaite daughter of Howard Braithwaite and Nellie, Wife of Howard Braithwaite on 1 Apr 1932. Ethel was born on 24 Jul 1910. She died on 15 May 1985.

ETHEL CUTTER
By her sister, Nina Cutter Messenger, 1994
My sister, Ethel, was born October 28, 1911, and died September 2, 1989.
In her earlier years she went to church and Sunday School with her older
brothers and sisters at Douglas. She first went to school in a one room school
house in the country and then at Covington. Our folks didn't go to church until
they helped start the Christian Church in Covington, so they were charter
members.
Due to her weak eyes Ethel didn't go to school too long. She later was
able to carry on a normal life by wearing strong lensed glasses. If that had
been present times, probably there would not have been problems.
Ethel married Jim Herrian August 6, 1931. In 1935 when our father died
they were living at Morrison, Oklahoma. They had no telephone, so my cousin,
Charlie Cutter, took me to Morrison and I told her about our father's death.
Later years they moved to Perry and Jim did mechanic work, also he did
some plumbing. They had two daughters; Virginia Lee and Clara Edith. After Jim
died in 1968, Ethel stayed in Perry so she could be close to her daughters and
she worked at different jobs.
Ethel was close enough we were able to see her occasionally. My mother was
good to help them with their family needs. Ethel always managed to come to our
family reunions. Sometime she came by bus or her daughters would bring her. She
never did miss the reunions until about two years before her death.
Ethel had one daughter in Vinita, Oklahoma. She moved there and was able
to live in a nice low income apartment as long as she was able to take care of
herself. Later she was put in a nursing home. One time when Alfred and I were
there we took her riding. She always enjoyed getting out and going some place.
Ethel's funeral was on Labor Day five years ago. We tried to stay in touch
with her family but they never did return the calls or letters. She has several
grandchildren and great-grandchildren around Perry and Vinita. We hope to hear
from them sometime in the near future.
