Kentucky. He died 3 Sep 1952 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, County, California
and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery. William was the second child of Duncan
Stuart McLaren and Elizabeth Enix. His middle names, Jackson Worthington, are
said to be for a commanding officer his father fought under during the Civil
War.William married Iona Wall 26 Feb 1893 in Okeene, Kingfisher County,
Oklahoma Territory. Ione was born 8 Dec 1873, probably in Indiana. She died 25 Apr 1966 in Canoga Park, Los Angeles County, California and is buried beside her husband at Oakwood Cemetery. Iona was the daughter of Burgess Wall and Tallitha Kathryn Franklin (or Smith?).In 1885 when William was about seventeen his family moved to Dodge City,
Kansas for a short period. In 1889, when he was about twenty, the family moved to Oklahoma.Before his marriage he lived for a time somewhere near the Mississippi
River. It may have been at this time that he worked for the railroad. His
children remember him telling them that at one time he swam across the
Mississipi River when it was one mile across and the water was nine feet deep.After his marriage in 1893, William and Iona lived in Kingfisher and
Bison, Oklahoma, where he engaged chiefly in farming. For a period they lived
in Tipton, Tillman County, Oklahoma, where he drove what his son, Ross McLaren, described to me as a "Medicine Wagon", selling spices, liniments and ointments. About 1919 the family was living in Bison, Garfield County, Oklahoma, where William was engaged in the building of cement bridges, many of which are in Enid, Oklahoma.Being chiefly a farmer and during the time of the depression, work was
scarce. By 1915 his first child, Rue, was married to Homer Taylor. Dean Taylor, their second son, remembers that in the early 1930's his grandfather and grandmother lived near them in Lariat in west Texas and were busy farming again. In about 1938 William and Iona followed the Taylors, who had already moved in 1936, to California. They settled in the San Fernando Valley.William must have learned the carpenter trade at some period as I remember seeing furniture in their home which he had made.
I married Dean in 1947 and shortly before that time, William, nearly 80
years old, had suffered strokes which rendered him partially paralyzed. He
lived to be 84 years old. William McLaren was fondly known to all of his grandchildren as "Grandad". He was about 5' 8" tall, had blue eyes, sandy hair in his youth, and of very stocky build.Iona McLaren was known to relatives as "Onie" but to her grandchildren she was "Grandma". She was a tiny little lady, probably about 5' tall. Of hearty stock, she bore 13 children. I never saw her sick. As can be seen in the Duncan Stuart McLaren family picture, she was a very pretty young woman, and remained that way in countenance as well as character.
As I remember her in her old age, she was always industrious. She loved to have pretty things around her, growing lovely flowers, and crocheting and quilting beautiful and useful articles. There was always a meal on the table to be shared with all of us who visited.
The kindly and industrious influence of this couple is reflected in all their children.
William married Iona Wahl daughter of Burgess Wahl and Telitha Kathryn Franklin on 26 Feb 1893 in Okeene, Kingfisher, Oklahoma Terr.. Iona was born on 8 Dec 1873 in , In. She died on 25 Apr 1966 in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, Ca. She was buried in Chatsworth, Ca.
