Notes for SAMUEL WEAVER:
Samuel Weaver (I842-864) was the first child of Marv Tate (I818-1891) and Charles Henry Weaver (I8181883). Samuel was named after his grandfather, Samuel Weaver (I797-1863), who arrived in Clermont County with his father, John Weaver (I749-183 1) in 18 10. John Weaver was a Revolutionary War veteran of the Berkeley County Virguna Militia and was patented 682 acres of land in Clermont County for his service. Patroitism ran deep m the Weaver family, so when the Civil War began in 1861, an unmarried Samuel would join many other Clermont County men in the call to arms.
Samuel Weaver enlisted in Williamsburg, Clermont County, Ohio for a three vear term and a $I00.00 bountv on August 14, 1862. He received a $25.00 advanced bounty and two dollars for travel expenses to Camp Dennison, Ohio. Upon arrival, Samuel was mustered into service and attached to the newly organized 89th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer lnfantry on the 26th day of August 1862. He was assigned to Company B under the command of Captain James W. Vickers.
After training cmnp, the 89th Ohio entered the field on September 3, 1862 and was stationed in Covington, Kentuckv to protect Cincinnati, Ohio from Major-General Edmund Kirbv Smith. The regiment was next assigned to Point Pleasant, West Virginia until it joined Major-General William Starke Rosecrans and the Army of the Cumberland in Tennessee. The 89th fought in a fierce tactical draw in the Battle of Stone's River against a Confederate army commanded by Major-Genral Braxton Bragg.
On September 1920, 1863, the 89th participated in the Battle of Chickamauga. Tennessee. Throughout the day, the regiment maintained an important skirmish line. At dusk, the regiment was out-flanked by the Confederates and was almost completely captured. All that was left of the 89th were forty wounded, twenty sick and seventy-five well men, including Samuel Weaver.
The next day Samuel Weaver and the remnants of the regiment were bolstered with replacements. The 89th was given the assignment of leading the attack on Missionary Ridge. Brigadier General Walter Chiles Whitaker, while rushing forward at the head of the attack, was knocked from his horse by a musket ball and for a short time rendered unfit for duty. In his battle report, General Whitaker wrote: "The entire command bore themselves like veterans, under a most withering, murderous fire of musketry, grape[shot], and canister for over three hours. firmly maintaining their ground until we were directed to retire, which was done in fair order, the enemy retiring also at the same time".
In May of 1864 the 89th Ohio Infantry joined Major-General William Tecumseh Sheridan's advance on Atlanta and fought in many battles. August 26th, 1864. near Atlanta, Georgia private Samuel Weaver became ill and entered the 89th Regimental field hospital. On September 23, 1864 Samuel's life ended as a result of chromc diarrhea-dysentery. Dysentery is an infectious disease that is due to poor sanitary conditions associated to soldiers in the field. It is spread by unhygienic handlers of food.
Samuel's worldly possessions at the time of his death, were a nightshirt, a knapsack, a small bible, a box of tools and two handkerchiefs. All of Samuel's personal items were abandoned for lack of transportation before they could be disposed of by a Council of Administration. The regiment had been ordered to move, General Sherman was beginning to start the infamous "March to the sea".
