Notes for JAMES HULICK JR
James Hulick, the subject of this memoir, was bom May 7, 1829, on the old Hulick homestead in Batavia township, on which he resided at his death, and he was one of the best known citizens and most successful agriculturalists of Clermont County, Ohio. His education was similar to that received by all the country children two score (40) years ago, when reading, writing and ciphering (arithmetic) to the single rule of three were the chief elementary branches taught. He worked on the farm, and early acquired of practical agriculture in all its varied branches. He was married March 21, 1861, by Rev. W. Q. Shannon to Elmira Fuller, daughter of William B. Fuller. When he arrived at his majority he connected himself with the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which in his infancy he had been baptised by his Christian parents, and of which he was for thirtv years a leading member, contributing largely to its material and spiritual success.
For over a score (20) of years he has been a zealous member of the Batavia Lodge I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Oddfellows ), No. 136, and in which he passed all the chairs. He served a long time in the Township Board of Education, and as clerk of his school sub-district, and ever exerted a great influence for the advancement of the cause of education. He was one of projectors of the Cincinnati & Eastern Narrow Guage Railway, and had been one of the Directors of the company almost from its first organization, and he clung with rare fidelity to its fortunes and labored most zealously for its final success. At the last spring election he was chosen by a large majority as one of the two Trustees of the Township Cemetery. He was a general farmer; was one of the largest and best potatoe raisers in the county, and last year manufactured from the products of his own land over 3300 gallons of sorghum molasses, in the making of which he was not surpassed in the Stat, and his brand of molasses ranked as the finest in the markets. He owned 370 acres of land, three hundred of which is the home farm where he lived surrounded with the comforts of an elegent home, of which his accomplished wife and happy children were the attractions that rewarded him for his labor. He had been most successful in all of his business ventures, to which he had ever brought a critical and prudent judgment, aided by good sense and a profound knowledge of human nature. He was among the first in the county to introduce and sell agricultural implements and machinery of each variety, in which special branch of business his sales were enormous and his profits large, and in which he made the bulk of his handsome fortune. When he began trading in machines the competition was very small and continued so for years, but with the course of time Clermont was over run with others in the same line of business selling at low rates produced by an unhealthy competition, and thereby reducing the profits, when he prudently retired from the trade. The character of James Hulick stands out in bold relief as that of a Christian gentleman and it has been a secret of his success life; and his upright reputation as a man marked him as a noble action scion of the old pioneer Hulick fmfly, so long and so honorably known in bright annals of Clermont as interwoven with its progress and advancement in all moral, religious, social educational and business matters.
