URIAH LEE WOLLAM and
EDITH MARIE FRANCIS

Uriah Lee Wollam was born December 7, 1889 in Monroe Township, Coshocton
County, Ohio. Lee married Edith Marie Francis in Ada, Ohio March 15, 1910.
Edith was born March 15, 1892 in Washington Court House Township, Coshocton Co.
Ohio.

Hiram Francis and his family were neighbors to Alfred Link Wollam. His wife
died when the children were young and he was determined to keep the family
together. Emma Wollam kept a loving hand ready to guide the girls into
womanhood. The families grew up together and later, two of the girls, Edith
Marie and Nellie Grace married two of the older sons, Lee and Perry Benson.

Lee Wollam was a farmer when he first married. He raised onions, shipping them
from onion sheds built on the Penn Railroad. This lead to a job on the
railroad at Dola Ohio. He was foreman at the coal and water tower. The trains
never stopped to fuel, they took water and coal on the fly by. From Dola,
Ohio, He went to Lima, Ohio, where he worked in Lima Locomotive Works from 1918
to 1925. Edith worked as a floor lady for Diesel Weimer Cigar Factory.

Lee and Edith's first child, Olga Marie was born January 15, 1911 just 10 days
before Lee's father and the rest of the family moved to Texas. When Marie was
15 years old her grandparents sent $100.00 and a train ticket so she could come
to Texas to visit. Lee bought a new car and used the $100.00 to bring the
whole family to Texas to visit. The trip was a long hard journey crossing the
Mississippi many times. They crossed the river from Louisiana into Texas on a
ferry and stayed in a tent city in Orange, Texas for three weeks because Texas
was quarantined for hoof and Mouth disease. Once here, they decided to stay in
Texas.

They lived in Alvin where Edith worked in the fig plant. They later moved to
Danbury and made their home beside the house of Lee's Mother, Emma Wollam. Lee
worked for the Freeport Sulphur Company until he retired.

Lee and Edith had four children. Olga Marie born January 15, 1911 in
Washington Township, Hardin Co., Ohio; Charles Edward born January 19, 1914 in
Dola, Hardin Co, Ohio; William R., born July 31, 1918 at Lima, Allen Co., Ohio;
and Betty Jean born August 1, 1927 in Danbury, Brazoria Co., Texas. Lee was
always bragging about having three Buckeyes and one Long horn. Marie was the
first grandchild of Link and Emma Wollam and her daughter Mary Catherine was
the first great grandchild.

Lee and Edith were a fun loving couple, always looking for the bright side of
life, through good times and bad, their children came first. That was their
happiness.

Lee Wollam died December 29, 1967 in the Freeport Community Hospital. Edith
also died in Freeport, Brazoria Co., Texas and both are buried in the Danbury
Cemetery, Brazoria Co., Texas.

ALVA JOHNSON (BALDY) WOLLAM
and SYLVIA MAUDE ROGERS

Alva Johnson Wollam, born May 14, 1892 in Layland, Coshocton County, Ohio, came
to Texas with his family from Ohio in 1911 when he was a young lad. He was in
the U.S. Army for only a short time before World War I ended. He worked in the
oil field at Stratton Ridge, Texas. He and Maude Rogers were married at the
Presbyterian Manse in Angleton, Texas on August 25, 1928. They made their home
on Avenue F in Danbury, Brazoria County, Texas and that remained their home
until Maude's death in 1990.

Maude had moved to Danbury with her mother, Agnes Stewart Rogers, and sister,
Faye Rogers. Both Agnes and Faye had tuberculosis and their doctor sent them
down to the coast climate from Arkansas. Both patients died in Danbury and
Maude stayed on there for a while and worked at McBride's General Store. Shereturned to Arkansas for a while but, returned to Danbury and married Alva.
Alva continued to work for Humble Oil Company during the depression years.

Alva and Maude had two daughters, Mildred Ellen born June 18, 1929, in
Freeport, Texas and Ruth Louise born eighteen months later on December 19,
1930, at the home place in Danbury.

Alva was known throughout the area as "Baldy" and many people did not know him
by any other name. He and Maude were known by many in Danbury as generous to
those in need and always ready to give a helping hand. There are many couples
in Danbury who built their first homes with help from them. After the
depression, Alva went into the construction business and built several houses
in Danbury and also did remodeling. He built three rent houses and a garage
apartment that served as rental property for many years.

About the year 1940, Alva and Maude opened Wollam Lumber Company in Danbury.
Maude had been a homemaker to this time, but she tended the business while Alva
made deliveries. The Lumber Yard was built on 4th Street and was in the home
place back yard.

Alva was involved in civic activities. He was one of the initial members of
the Board of Directors of the Danbury Water District and was a charter member
of the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department. He, along with his brother, Ora, and
other veterans established an American Legion Post in Danbury. Alva was
instrumental in moving an old army barracks building from Camp Wallace to
Danbury to be used as a community center as well as a meeting place by the
Legion.

Alva continued to run the lumber yard until his death following prostate
surgery. He died in Herman Hospital in Houston February 20, 1961. His funeral
service was at the Danbury Baptist Church and burial in the Danbury Cemetery.

Maude continued to live in the home place and run the lumber yard but realized
that men did not want to deal with a woman when it came to hardware and
building supplies. Her daughter Mildred and her husband Archie Messec moved
from Angleton and ran the business for several years before it was permanently
closed. During her life time Maude served the community as a member of the
School Board. She served as secretary of the Board for many years.

Maude lived alone until the age of 92 when she experienced some falls and had
difficulty getting up. She decided at the age of 92 that she should go to the
nursing home in Angleton "until she got better". She displayed that fighting
spirit to the end. She died February 19, 1990. Her funeral was at the Palms
Funeral Home Chapel in Angleton,

Alva married Sylvia Maude Rogers on 25 Aug 1927 in Angleton, Brazoria Co, Tx. Sylvia was born on 28 Jun 1894 in Wirth, Sharp, Ar. She died on 21 Feb 1990 in Angleton, Brazoria, Texas. She was buried on 23 Feb 1990 in Danbury, Brazoria, Texas.

with his family to Conroe, Texas in January of 1911 and attended high school
there until moving to Danbury, Texas in Brazoria County the later part of 1911.
He lived most of his life in Danbury except for a short time in Sweeny and
Stratton Ridge and his time in the armed services.

He went into the U.S. Army in September 1917 where he became a machine gun
instructor. He went with the 36 Infantry Division to France and Germany in
July of 1918. Overcome by mustard gas, wounded by machine gun fire and then
later by a mortar shell, he spent time in the hospital somewhere in France and
in England before coming home some time after May 5, 1919. He was one of 129
men of the 36th division to receive the French Croix de Guerres.

While in France he was active in the formation of the American Legion. He
helped write the first two sentences of the preamble of the constitution and
was one of the charter members of the new veterans organization. The American
Legion became a very important part of his life. He was a charter member of the
Charles Dixon American Legion Post of Angleton and he and his brother Alva were
instrumental in beginning the Honeycutt-Chovanec Post in Danbury. Many of the
family vacations were spent going to the state convention. He knew many people
throughout the state including Lyndon Johnson and Sam Rayburn.

talk to the people living in the village. He was discharged in 1919.

Freeport Sulphur Co. in 1924. He worked at Bryan Mound and Hoskins Mound near
Freeport Texas. He operated a dredge boat for many years dredging mud for
sulphur wells and developing many acres of lakes. Retirement came early in 1949
because of illness. This illness was later determined to be caused by injuries
and mustard gas received during the First World War.

Ora Wollam married Nancy Louise Joy June 25, 1922. Louise Joy was born October
2, 1901 in Cottonwood, Texas. They had three children:
Alfred Eli Wollam, July 19, 1923
Eugene Lee Wollam, March 9, 1925
Roy Johnson Wollam, December 14, 1927.

The family lived in Danbury in July of 1923, at Stratton Ridge in March of
1925, and in Danbury at the corner of Avenue F and First Street across from
the school building in December 1927 when Roy was born. A 10 acre track of
land was purchased on Scrubanek Road and the house which became the homestead
was built in 1929 or 1930. His son Eli bought the house across from the school
after World War II and moved it onto part of Ora's 10 acre track. Eli still
lives in the house at this date.

Ora and Louise Wollam lived a full life together with a great love for each
other. They were married for 59 years until her death November 15, 1981.

He never met a stranger and could go any where in the state and meet someone he
